Daytona Beach is slated to open its first municipal skate park Saturday morning at Bethune Point Park.

The $800,000 facility at 101 Bellevue Ave. will offer 35,000 square feet of street obstacles, ramps, a bowl, quarter pipe and a "street clam," according to city officials. On Saturday, a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. will be followed by an exhibition, competition and open skating.

The facility will be open seven days a week from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Skaters 17 years old and younger will be required to wear helmets as well as knee and elbow pads, city officials say. Also, BMX bikes must be equipped with park pegs and riders must wear certified bike helmets.

At last the Orlando Film Festival has a new permanent home — no more movies shown in spaces better suited for furniture storage. For this, its fourth year, the OFF will be in the new Plaza Cinema Cafe.

Brett Jaffee, "our mission is to support the cause of independent cinema and to promote culture and the arts in Downtown Orlando by exposing a wide audience to the unique and diverse stories told by independent filmmakers from around the world."

Actress-turned-director Cheryl Hines, a woman with UCF and Orlando ties, will be here to show her movie, Serious Moonlight. A couple of animated film discussions and parties are part of the lineup.

The base price of a one-day ticket to SeaWorld will rise $4 to $78.95. The move brings SeaWorld's base price to just 5 cents less than single-day, single-park tickets to Disney or Universal, both of which raised their own prices over the summer.

The resort also will reduce the price of its popular "Fun Cards," which allow Florida residents to make repeated visits to the park with the purchase of a single-day ticket.

More local news from in and around the Highgate Park Davenport area as Gulfstream International Airlines will add daily direct flights to Orlando and Tampa beginning Sunday, the carrier announced Thursday in a move to provide nonstops previously offered by Delta Air Lines.

Weekday nonstop service between Orlando and Tallahassee will increase from three round trips to four. The weekday direct flights between Tampa and Tallahassee will increase from four round trips to six, the airline said. Reduced service is offered on the weekend.

"We just moved to try to fill all the demand we are seeing out there," said Mickey Bowman, Gulfstream's vice president of corporate development.

But rain and clouds could interfere. Forecasters said Monday there is a 60 percent chance bad weather will stall the launch.

The Ares I-X will fly for just two minutes. The first-stage booster will parachute into the Atlantic and be recovered. The tall, skinny rocket is outfitted with some 700 sensors. It's a $445 million test.

NASA hopes to launch an Ares rocket into orbit with astronauts in 2015. But a panel of experts contends it will be more like 2017. The Ares is supposed to replace space shuttles and eventually fly to the moon. The White House, though, is considering various options.

It's the first time in 34 years that a rocket other than the space shuttle has stood at Launch Pad 39-B. NASA modified the pad for this rocket, which is supposed to eventually carry astronauts to the moon.

But the White House may scrap those plans. A panel of aerospace experts that provided President Barack Obama with a list of possible exploration options is issuing its final report later this week. The experimental Ares I rocket — taller than the Statue of Liberty — spent all night traveling from the hangar to the pad. The four-mile trip took more than seven hours.

In order to move the ball from Lauderhill, Florida where it was created to the company headquarters in Orlando, Ripley’s has had to hire a crane (one at each end of the journey), a flatbed truck and a transportation team. The orb was created by Joel Waul, a 28-year-old clothing store worker who lives in Lauderhill, near Ft. Lauderdale.

It all started for Waul’s ball on April 10, 2004, as he watched an episode of the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! TV show on which a rubber band ball was dropped out of an airplane. He decided on the spot that he wanted to create the world’s largest rubber band ball. He began creating the ball that day with rubber bands he found around the house.
